Still not a dog person…

I read or heard somewhere that dogs are pack animals and like to be with others.
That being said, our dog Bandit, does exactly what his name suggests, stealing everything in his path to run around with it and possibly cause people to run around trying to chase him to get said thing back from him. He may finally give it up if he is cornered or offered something he wants more or just because he is bored with having that thing, for now. In the process of being chased, he has run around the entire yard, through the dirt under the deck and gotten grass stains all over it. His most favorite thing to steal is pool towels because he can whip them around like long hair… Making that part up but that is what it looks like. We have to tell all our friends to put all their belongings in the shed so he doesn’t grab them and run.
I think another trait of dogs, especially Bandit, is running. He runs around with aforementioned items around the yard, runs around the yard to dry off after a dip in the pool AND the most annoying run he does is run away from us when coming in from the backyard. We have a gate to the backyard but the side door and porch are not behind that gate so if we open the gate for him to come in house, he needs to come out of gate and go around corner to get to the porch.  If you ever saw the movie “Up” you understand how distrcted dogs can be; “squirrel!”  Because of this, we usually will attach him to a leash to go around that corner because if he gets distracted, he will run after it or just down the street and over the neighbors yards. Well we have not learned our lesson because at times, Bandit is good and will go around that corner without incident but it is always when we are tired or late or already aggravated that he runs after something or nothing at all.
Last night at 11 pm, we were not amused when he did just that, got distracted by our outdoor cat, looked at D and made a break for it down the street. Dogs are quite fast. There was not catching up to him and i think he was playing a sadistic game of “hide and seek” because he disappeared for a while and didn’t move. We could not hear his tags jingling or see him running at all.
We went in the house planning to just leave him to his own devices until he found a way to knock on the door but then felt guilty that he might get hurt and we went back out to look for him, saps we are… He came home just as we drove down the street as if he was waiting for just that.
